TODAY’S AUDIO – ‘The 1900 House’ CE Pre-Intermediate p.81
A big farewell to Leo, who is going to Perth on Saturday to meet his girlfriend. It’s been good having you here. All the best!
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions on Korean traditions. We came up with types of dress, food, fighting techniques and even types of houses.
You also asked about Australian traditions. Bloody hell! What a question…
Firstly, we have two traditional days in our year: Australia Day and ANZAC Day.
Australia Day is the 26th of January and celebrates the arrival of the First Fleet (group of ships) of convicts (criminals) on Australian shores. If you didn’t know, Australia was originally used by the British to keep prisoners, as their jails were full! It seems stupid, but yes, we celebrate this for our national day. It’s a public holiday and people everywhere get together to have a BBQ (pronounced bar be q) along with a few drinks.
ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day is the more important of the two days in my opinion. It’s a day to remember the soldiers who served the two countries during WWI and WWII. What these people had to experience to protect our countries is unimaginable and far more horrible than anything we’ll ever have to face. There’s a parade through Sydney which is begun by a playing of ‘The Last Post’. Again, people get together to have a BBQ and quite a few drinks. There are special football matches and this is the only day that it is legal to play an old wartime game called ‘two-up’.

[...] In class we briefly read about ‘The 1900 House’ and compared old vs. new in our respective countries – this lesson should be read alongside this one about traditions [...]
